NOTE: Since we’ve published this post, we moved the poll to our Voices Page. So if you’re willing to vote for “Augmented Reality” ANE or share your ideas with us, click here to go there. We’d be so happy to hear your ideas and feelings about the AR possible availability in Adobe AIR. Cheers!
July 14, 2017 Update: Wikitude SDK7 was released yesterday https://www.facebook.com/WIKITUDE/videos/10154783097374033/. And the release notes said: “Support for Bitcode”. We had waited for this, for almost 2 years and it’s finally here. So, we didn’t loose a minute; we put away all our other works to test the new SDK and I am now super happy to let you know that their new SDK was successfully loaded in AdobeAIR. We confirmed this a few minutes ago. cheers! We are re-scheduling our timelines to push the AR ANE development ahead of our to-do-lists.
October 1 , 2015 Update: We’re waiting on Wikitude to add ANE requirements to their iOS side of the SDK.
August 30 , 2015 Update: The Android team managed to finish the first milestone of the AR ANE. you can see it working on Adobe AIR here on YouTube https://youtu.be/zzmZ_mh9ltg. The iOS team has fallen a bit behind but they are also catching up with their first milestone…
July 9 , 2015 Update: Wikitude will be releasing their new SDK V5 at July 21 and our AdobeAIR extension will be built on it, fresh! It’s too early to say but we are hoping to have the ANE released by mid-August. We will update you more soon.
June 29 , 2015 Update: Thanks for your votes. I think you also made a very good choice by picking Wikitude as the alternative to Metaio. Wikitude seems to be very active and constant about their SDK and they are also using web technologies JS/HTML for managing 3D content which will be a great tool for creating AR content in AdobeAIR. I will update you with more news soon.
Hi AR Devs,
As you may have followed us along in regard of Augmented Reality extension developments, you may remember that we started with our own algorithm first but soon understood that we should not try to invent the wheel from scratch so we decided to find a powerful SDK and make it available to Adobe AIR so we picked Vuforia. After a few months we were forced to discontinue the Vuforia ANE development because of their overnight change in prices which made it impossible for us to charge our already delivered projects. Although weeks later they reconsidered their pricing table, we had lost our trust in them and decided to move away anyway. That was when we picked Metaio. Metaio looked a bit costy at the first glance but was the most powerful AR SDK we could imagine and I would had bought it even if their price was twice higher! We were thinking that with Metaio SDK developed into AdobeAIR ANE, we all can live happily ever after but that was just a fairy tale when Apple acquired Metaio! Although we still can build and publish apps using our already purchased license (until December 15th) but this is very risky because we know there will be no update from Metaio anymore.
So, we need an alternative. unfortunately we were not able to find a good alternative compared to Metaio but below are the best options we have. Please cast your vote and help us decide which SDK we should start developing on? If you think there are other cool SDKs to be added to this poll, please let me know.
Note that Metaio was using AREL which could make 3D management possible without the need for devs to know 3D programming at all. that was the best part we loved about Metaio.
Which AR SDK you like to have as an ANE?
